The inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) has scored another “first” for any Olympic event: It is going paper-less for its opening ceremony on Aug 14 and the finale 12 days later.

Spectators can use a pre-paid card not only to gain entry into the Marina Bay Floating Stadium for the two ceremonies, they can also use it to enjoy free public transport and pay for goods and services at selected outlets.

Mr Richard Loong, operations director for the YOG opening and closing ceremonies, said that spectators will only need to tap the card at any one of the five entry points to enter.

“The green light flashes and you’re good to go,” said Mr Loong.

The back of the card is colour-coded to indicate the section where the spectator should be seated.

The organisers have added features to prevent people from sneaking in. Once the card has been used to access the venue, it cannot be used again to gain access. A person leaving the enclosure will be given a wristband which will allow him re-entry.

Apart from being a collector’s item, the card can be used after YOG as a regular transit card.

Cardholders can top up the value online, at DBS and POSB ATMs, as well as at selected SingPost branches and AXS stations. For entry to YOG’s individual events and matches, paper tickets will continue to be used. Joanne Chan
