Indians are geared up to celebrate the 64th anniversary of freedom on August 15. The flag hoisting will be observed all across the nation to mark the historical day.
The Indian Flag also known as Tricolour or Tiranga is important part of Independence Day celebration. But there are several unknown interesting facts about the tricolur.
The Journey of Indian Flag is very interesting. During the British Rule in 19th Century, India adapted its first official flag after the Famous sipoy mutiny in 1857. It was a reflection of other British colonies in Canada and Australia. The first flag of India had blue banner with sign of Union Flag in the upper-left quadrant and a Star of India capped by the royal crown in the middle of the right half.
In the 1921, Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi expressed the need of an Indian Flag. He proposed a flag with the charkha or spinning wheel at the centre. The Charkha was placed at the centre of a Red Green banner.
The next flag was Swaraj Flag, which was accepted by Indian Congress in 1931. The flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya, an agriculturist from Machilipatnam. The flag was similar to the Gandhi flag. Later it was modified and white strip added in the middle of banner to symbolize other community. The Red and Green colours represent Hindu and Muslim community respectively.
Just few days before the Independence Day on August 15, 1947, the specially constituted Constituent Assembly decided that the flag of India must be acceptable to all parties and communities. On July 22, 1947, Tiranga became the official flag of Indian Republic. It has three colour, Saffron, White and Green. Charkha was replaced with Ashoka Chakra in the middle.
Later Flag Code was introduced in the constitution. According to the law the flag should be made of Khadi. The Bureau of Indian Standrads hold the rights to decide it manufacturing standards.
The manufacturing right is given to Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission and the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha was the sole manufacturer of the flag till 2009.
Initially, the use of Indian Flag was prohibited for Private citizens but in the 2002 the Supreme Court of India asked government to amend the Flag Law to allow its use to private citizen. In the year 2005, government amended the law and it becomes available in other fabrics too.
In a significant decision in August 2010, The Bilaspur High Court ruled that hoisting tricolour after sunset is not an offence. Read nore
