It has been 13 years since the untimely and tragic death of Selena Quintanilla Perez. The 23-year-old Tejano star was gunned down on March 31, 1995, by her fan club president Yolanda Saldivar.
Many students may recognize the name from the motion picture that starred Jennifer Lopez in 1997. Perez, known simply as Selena, was the queen of Tejano, a Latin style of music that blends Tex-Mex, pop, country and German polka. Tejano music was notorious for being male-dominated, until Selena stepped onto the scene.
Over a span of 14 years, the Mexican-American, who was a Texas native, won the coveted Female Vocalist of the Year award eight years in a row at the Tejano Music Awards. She was the first tejano artist to reach the Recording Industry Association of America's gold status and won the most sought- after trophy in the music industry: a Grammy.
